It’s that time of year once again. Not only is it the start of fall, but it’s also football season, and with football season comes the annual New Hampshire Tackles Hunger Food Drive. Every year, WMUR and the New Hampshire Food Bank team up with most of the high schools around the state to participate in one of the biggest food drives of the year.
As you may or may not know, September is Hunger Action Month. The food drive is put on to establish awareness and give help to those in need. NH Tackles Hunger was started four years ago and since then, over 125,000 pounds of food has been collected and donated to food pantries throughout the state. The way it works is schools collect donations of nonperishable foods and goods at home football games during September and early October. Nonperishables include anything that doesn’t go bad such as canned and boxed goods. Some schools even offer incentives to those who donate.
MMHS is participating as we do every year. This year however, our very own Key Club is in charge of the project. The club is working with the Manchester Church of God as well as WMUR to set up the drive here at the school. A donation box is set up in the cafeteria outside the Library Media Center. Students are strongly encouraged to donate. The box will remain in the cafe until the night of October 7, 2016. At the home football game against Salem High School, the box will be moved to the gate of the Chabot-McDonough Field to continue collection, so you can bring donations the night of the game as well to continue the drive. The club also worked out a deal with the district that grants students who donate three nonperishable items free admission to the football game that night. If you drop off your donation of three or more non-perishables to the box in the cafeteria this week while a Key Club member is present, said member will give you a free admission voucher to Friday night’s football game.
The drive gives an even greater meaning to high school football. All proceeds go to the New Hampshire Food Bank. If you wish to follow the food drive, WMUR has extensive coverage, both online and on television, of many of the schools that participate. Also, you may listen to the announcements from Mr. Adamakos this coming week regarding the NH Tackles Hunger Food Drive!
